FINAL ARTWORK

<PAN RUINING_"Who Am I?"_Task 3>

200-WORD RATIONALE

In my final artwork, I've decided on making the main material of Giorgio de Chirico's paintings, while keeping the theme of the current society, to stimulate people's deep thoughts, adding reflections to the figures and the blackboard to make the material better integrated into the new background. The reflection of the figures and the blackboard is added to make the material blend in better with the new background, presenting a surrealistic work that is not too abrupt and harmonious.

The aim of the design is to express the loss of personal identity in a highly digitalized society. Through this design, I hope to make the viewer think: who are we in such a data-driven world? The faceless figure in the picture symbolizes human beings who are controlled by systematization, the question mark on its face represents confusion and disorientation, which means human beings have lost their thinking, while the code on the blackboard and the data stream in the background imply that human thoughts and behaviors are manipulated by algorithms in modern society, and that everyone is in a cocoon of information and thus has become a mechanical consuming individual, rather than a human being with the ability to think independently.

The design principles used in this work are: contrast, balance and emphasis to make the image more visually impactful. A strong contrast between warm and cold was chosen for the background to create a technological cyber atmosphere, while enhancing the prominence of the subject. The layout between the faceless figure and the blackboard maintains visual balance, allowing the viewer's eyes to go back and forth between the two. The code on the blackboard and the “Human not found” at the bottom of the blackboard are meant to emphasize the theme and retain the sense of mystery.

REFLECTION

What have I learnt in this module?

I learnt a lot about the different types of design principles from this module and that design principles are the foundation of design, the importance of implementing design principles in everything I make, and that all design should be centered around design principles. In addition, I learned how to analyze and observe a piece of artwork and how to visually analyze artwork step by step. A good piece of artwork is not only about captivating the viewer, but it is also about designing in a way that conveys and communicates a message to the target audience in a purposeful way that resonates with them.

What did I enjoy the most? What did I not enjoy the most?

What I enjoy most about the module was analyzing the design principles in the artwork, which allowed me to better understand a piece of artwork and learn from the designer. This was followed by the part where I redesigned the artwork myself, which I found interesting because I could use my previous knowledge of design principles to solve the problem. I didn’t enjoy coming up with my own version of new sketches and ideas for the original artwork, which I thought was difficult because the original artwork was already perfect. However, I didn’t enjoy making the final artwork because it was challenging to make it look the way I wanted it to look in my head, but with sir's guidance, it gave me quite a lot of inspiration and progress.

What have I learnt about myself through this module?

I learned the principles of design, so that I can have more ideas and traces to follow in my design afterward. For example, before I would only think of presenting the theme of confusion by darkening the overall color tone, but this would be unappealing to the viewer, and I should use contrast or other principles to highlight the theme according to the design principles. In the process of completing the final outcome, I realized that I could master Photoshop and Illustrator better and learned new things in the process.

What has changed and what has not in my learning journey?

What has changed is that with the learning of design principles through this template, now instead of simply appreciating a piece of work with my eyes, I have gradually gained a deeper understanding and feeling for the design of the work. What hasn't changed is that I still lack a lot of knowledge about design, and I still need to further study and apply my knowledge in order to get a better grasp of the changes in design aesthetics and understanding.

What are my aspirations?

My hope is to be able to utilize more design principles in my future college projects and assignments instead of designing blindly and without a lack of design aesthetics. In addition, to be able to be more skillful and understand these design principles in my future designs, so that the design principles are not just cold words but become a helper to help me design better works. Lastly, I would like to thank my lecturers and tutors for their guidance and feedback throughout the module.
