INSTRUCTION

LECTURE

Recap Task 3 Brief :

·Select one of the 3 ideas you proposed in Task 2.
·Develop it through colour exploration, composition, typeface, positioning, etc., with design principles in mind.
·Finalise your idea.
·Create your final design in A4 size, JPEG format in at least 300dpi pixel size. Label the design as <Your Name_Title of Design_Task 3>
·Write a 200-word rationale explaining/defending: i) the decisions made in your design, ii.) the meaning/purpose of the design and iii) the design principles that are employed to create the design.
·Include feedback from your lecturer.

DEVELOPMENT

Original

Fig 1.1

Based on the last three sketches, I chose Sketch 3 as the next object to work on.

Fig 1.2
Initial results

Fig 2.1

During the consultation, sir told me that this initial result was too dark, and the transition between the background and the foreground floor was unnatural. He told me I could go online and find a more flattering background.

Further improvement

Fig 2.3
Progress:

Fig 2.4

Use Procreate to color the faceless mannequin's face and the blackboard to restore their original appearance.

Fig 2.5

Extract an object in Photoshop.

Fig 2.6

Crop the background to A4 size and insert the main subject.

Fig 2.7

Adjusted the background and overall contrast, saturation, brightness, etc.

Fig 2.8

Fig 2.9

Added shadows to both the figure and the blackboard to make the overall composition look more cohesive and less disconnected.

Fig 2.10

Download a suitable font for this theme online and use Adobe Illustrator to add code to the blackboard and a question mark to the faceless mannequin’s face.

Fig 2.11 The second outcome

During the Week 7 consultation, sir told me that changing the background to a digital sky would create a stronger sense of futurism and technology.

FINAL OUTCOME

<PAN RUINING_"Who Am I?"_Task 3>

200 Words Rationale:

In my final artwork, I've decided on making the main material of Giorgio de Chirico's paintings, while keeping the theme of the current society, to stimulate people's deep thoughts, adding reflections to the figures and the blackboard to make the material better integrated into the new background. The reflection of the figures and the blackboard is added to make the material blend in better with the new background, presenting a surrealistic work that is not too abrupt and harmonious.

The aim of the design is to express the loss of personal identity in a highly digitalized society. Through this design, I hope to make the viewer think: who are we in such a data-driven world? The faceless figure in the picture symbolizes human beings who are controlled by systematization, the question mark on its face represents confusion and disorientation, which means human beings have lost their thinking, while the code on the blackboard and the data stream in the background imply that human thoughts and behaviors are manipulated by algorithms in modern society, and that everyone is in a cocoon of information and thus has become a mechanical consuming individual, rather than a human being with the ability to think independently.

The design principles used in this work are: contrast, balance and emphasis to make the image more visually impactful. A strong contrast between warm and cold was chosen for the background to create a technological cyber atmosphere, while enhancing the prominence of the subject. The layout between the faceless figure and the blackboard maintains visual balance, allowing the viewer's eyes to go back and forth between the two. The code on the blackboard and the “Human not found” at the bottom of the blackboard are meant to emphasize the theme and retain the sense of mystery.

FEEDBACK

WEEK 6: Sir told me that the whole piece looked too dark, that the floor and the background didn't blend in and showed me suggestions on how to enhance it.

WEEK 7During the Week 7 consultation, sir told me that changing the background to a digital sky would create a stronger sense of futurism and technology.

REFLECTION

This last task was a little hard for me, but it was fun. Processing and designing the seer's artwork gave me a better understanding of design principles. I realized that almost all the details in a piece of artwork are designed according to the design principles, and each detail has its own meaning. It was interesting to give this piece of artwork a contemporary meaning and to stimulate people to think about it.
