PROJECT 2: MOTION GRAPHIC

EXERCISE 3: KINETIC TYPOGRAPHY

I discussed with my group members and we decided to choose the song “Bad Guy” for our exercise. We also discussed the video style and divided the lyrics among the members as follows:

Group A: Pink Team
Colour Palatte: Green, Red, Black, White

Work distribution in our group:

[Verse 1] - Rachel
[Pre-Chorus] - Teng Yu Meng
[Verse 2] - Jing En
[Pre - Chorus] - Pan Ruining
[Bridge + Outro] - Alexis
[Combining all parts + Chorus + Instrumental part] - Aricia

My lines have the same rhythm but different lyrics, so I used the position tool to make each line of text appear as if it is falling downward. The second-to-last word in each line occupies about two-thirds of the screen, and I applied blur and effects to give it a slightly eerie feeling.

After that, in the first four lines, each line ends with the same word “GUY,” and I used the scale tool to make it bounce along with the beat of the drums. In the last four lines, the final word of each line is “type,” so I used the rotation tool to make it sway from left to right each time it appears.

After all the members completed their parts of the video, the group leader carried out the final merging and adjustments.

FINAL OUTCOME

EXERCISE 4: PIE CHART

In Exercise 4, we needed to use After Effects to complete a Motion Graphic Chart based on the assigned chart. I was assigned a Bar Chart.

After following the AE tutorial video recorded by tutor, I completed this exercise.

EXERCISE 5: VECTOR ANIMATION

This exercise required each person to create a vector animation based on the assigned list using Adobe Illustrator and After Effects. I was assigned A.

Fig 3.1 Source provided

First, I separated each object that needed animation into different layers in Adobe Illustrator.

Next, I imported these layers into After Effects and followed the tutorial, using different tools to create the animations for the elements.

REFLECTION

Experience:
In Exercise 3, I found it to be a very interesting experience. During the process, some things also happened: our group initially chose green as the main color because it is Billie Eilish’s fan color. However, we realized that green didn’t really convey the original feel of the song, so we changed the main color of our Kinetic Typography video to red. When I was working on my part of the lyrics, I initially felt a bit lost, but after continuous adjustments, experimentation, and encouragement from our group leader, I gradually completed my lyrics. Seeing the final outcome with all the members’ videos combined gave me a great sense of accomplishment.

In Exercise 4, at first I had no idea how to start and didn’t know how to add the bars. Later, by following the tutor’s tutorial video on bar charts, I learned how to use the Pen Tool to create the bars and how to use the Trim Paths tool to complete the animation effects.

In Exercise 5, I correctly separated all the layers in Adobe Illustrator. This process wasn’t so simple, because I found that some elements were blocked by others, so I had to adjust the layers carefully to restore everything to its correct position. Then I imported the layers into After Effects and created the animations on the timeline. Although it took quite a lot of time, I was satisfied with the final result.

Observations:
In Exercise 3, I observed that it was quite challenging to time the appearance of each word to match the rhythm of the music, because the song is so fast-paced. If the timing isn’t precise, it can greatly affect the overall visual effect.

In Exercise 4, I observed that increasing the stroke value of the Pen Tool allowed me to create bars of the size I wanted, which was very convenient and efficient. I also found that Trim Paths is a very useful motion graphics tool, as it lets you control the start and end timing of the bars.

In Exercise 5, I observed that the preparation work of separating layers in Adobe Illustrator is extremely important. If the layers are not properly separated from the beginning, the animation process in After Effects can become very chaotic.

Findings:
Through the exercises in Project 2, I found that stacking different effects in After Effects produces different results, and many tools have uses beyond their basic functions. It is really important to master the basic tools and use them skillfully. I also found that before creating an animation with many elements and layers, it is necessary to organize the layers clearly in Adobe Illustrator and name each layer, as this makes the later work in After Effects much easier.
