REFLECTION

Experiences:
During this semester I learned a lot of new knowledge such as typographic systems, typeface design, logo design, and more. I also became more confident and skilled in using Illustrator, Photoshop, and After Effects, which were especially challenging for me in the first semester. This Advanced Typography module gave me many valuable lessons and helped me appreciate how much effort goes into being a designer. Starting from Task 2, I began to struggle a bit and often felt tired during the design process due to difficulties with websites and software. However, despite these challenges, it was still a fulfilling and enjoyable experience. I also received recognition from Mr Vinod this semester, which gave me a lot of motivation. His guidance and constructive feedback helped me improve significantly, and he would even demonstrate things himself when we were confused. What impressed me the most was the creation of Task 3. Although the process was tough and I thought about giving up many times, completing it gave me a strong sense of achievement and happiness. Overall, I gained a lot from this module and I hope to apply what I have learned more effectively in the future.

Observations:
Through the three tasks in this module, I observed that the design and style of a typeface are among the most important elements in expressing a product or concept. For example, when I designed a movie poster in Task 1, I realized how crucial the font style was in conveying the emotion of the film. In Task 3, when I started looking for typeface references I liked, one of my ideas was inspired by the album fonts used by K-pop idols. Different album concepts and styles often come with very distinct font designs, and I believe this is one of the most important ways for the audience to immediately understand the theme or mood of the album. When creating my font applications, I experimented with various mockups and color combinations. However, because the font itself had such a strong personality, many of the visual pairings did not work well. Even a slight mismatch could instantly pull the viewer out of the intended mood or concept. This experience gave me a much deeper understanding of the importance of type design and why attention to detail is absolutely necessary during the design process.

Findings:
I found that the process of creating a typeface was much more complex than I had imagined. Each letter required careful and detailed adjustments, and maintaining a consistent style throughout was particularly challenging. I also came to better understand the importance of grids and guidelines in design, as they help build a clear and unified structure. Completing a typeface requires not only technical precision but also a strong sensitivity to proportion, rhythm, and form. I realized that constant practice and experimentation are key to mastering type design. When I applied my typeface to actual applications, I discovered a whole new kind of design enjoyment. I was no longer just focused on how the work looked on screen, but also on how it would appear and function in real life. This experience made me realize that a successful design is not only about looking good, but also about finding the right balance between aesthetics and practicality in real use.
