LECTURES

LECTURES 1-Character Design Basics

-Designing a character requires these three steps to complete:

·Iconic: Stylized designed characters are often iconic that you can immediately recgnize them even in black silhouttes.

·SimplicityThis is because the simplicity of the design allows viewers to digest and understand the purpose of the characters easily.

·UniqueWhich in return makes them unique characters that are not only memorable, but makes an impact on the viewers.

Fig 1.1.1 Example of Iconic Simplicity Unique

-Principles of character design:
·Shapes
·Colour
·Emphasis
·Contrast
·Harmony
·Expressions/Poses

·Shapes: It is used to identify a character from one another

Fig 1.1.3 Example of shapes

·Colour: Different colours give impressions of different emotions and easily relatable by the viewers.

Fig 1.1.3 Example of colour

·Emphasis/ContrastA good character exaggerates on the emphasis and contrasting visual elements to make the design stand out by using colours.

·Harmony: All shapes, lines, colour, motifs, patterns must be put together in a tasteful manner.

·Expressions/Poses: Clear visualization of your characters behaviours, quirks, personalities make it easier to appeal to you viewers.

LECTURES 2-Chiaroscuro

-The purpose of Chiaroscuro :

·The use of light and dark to create the illusion of three-dimensional volume on a flat surface.
·To increase the scene’s dramatic tension by exaggerating the subject’s importance using color or light contrast.

Fig 1.2.1 Still Life with Fruit (Caravaggio, 1601)

In other application of chiaroscuro for visual artworks such as comic, film, digital works - this is an artistic lighting choice which the focus point or subject of a scene is brightly colored or contrasted with a dark background.

Fig 1.2.2 Girl With A Pearl Earing (Movie, 2003) and (Vermeer, 1665)

Chiaroscuro is used in visual narratives because it is an excellent lighting choice to differentiate between positive and negative spaces.

-Positive space : Refers to subject matter or object of interest in a visual.

-Negative space : Refers to the filled space or background that surround subject matter or object of interest in visual.

Fig 1.2.3

·Increase dramatic tension: Gives thrilling emotive depth on the look and feel in the scene.

·Create sensational effect: Helps elevate fantastical viewpoints to emphasis on the narrative.

·Attract attention: Establish visual hierarchy, the main point of the scene.

·Make tasteful composition: The play on negative VS positive spaces creates attractive scenes.

TASK

-Task 1: Vormator Challenge - character creation

In this task, a creative exercise is aimed at teaching the fundamentals of vector illustration and character design using Adobe Illustrator.

·The path for drawing basic shapes.

Fig 2.1.1 Path of basic shapes

·Practice basic shapes using the pen tool through the lecture.

Fig 2.1.2 Basic shapes of my practice

·Practice using the examples provided by Mr.Hafiz Zamri.

·Vormator of my design

Fig 2.1.3 Vormator of my design

Inspiration: I’m a big fan of white radishes and the movie Monster Hunt. This little monster design was inspired by the film’s main character, Wuba.

Later, I wasn’t satisfied with this little monster, so I decided to create a new one.

-Task 2:  Composition

In this task, We need to place our Vormator character into a Pokemon card composition, incorporating foreground, midground, and background elements. We may also create a new shape not bound by the vormator rules or shapes. We may also come up with a new character that does is not bound by the vormator shapes.

I really like the Molly blind box, so this is the inspiration for my new character:

Fig 2.2.1 Inspiration for my new character

I first sketched on the iPad, then used the Pen Tool to outline it.

Next, Mr.Hafiz Zamri taught us in class how to add more colors in Illustrator, and I used this method to choose the right colors for character.

Fig 2.2.5 The colors I selected

The final version:

Fig 2.2.7 The final version of my character

Then, design a composition that effectively uses foreground, midground, and background to tell a soft narrative about your character.

This is my initial draft for the background:

Fig 2.2.8 Initial draft for the background

After sending the initial sketch to Mr.Hafiz Zamri, he told me that I need to demonstrate the understanding of the composition, and the best way is referring to the framed ink book which contains many references with rationale for you to understand why the composition and the shot setup will work for the narrative of your environment.

I got inspiration from this picture to make my sketch:

Fig 2.2.9 Inspiration of background

So, this is the second sketch of the background I designed.

Fig 2.2.10 The second sketch of the background

This time, I wanted to focus on the character, so I put a shell in the center to make the protagonist stand out.

Based on this sketch, I created the background in Illustrator and Photoshop.

Fig 2.2.11 Background
Fig 2.2.12 Midground
The final version:

Fig 2.2.13 The final version for the background

The concept behind this composition is that I placed a castle in the background with light colors to make it feel distant, while the shell in the center highlights the character, and the rocks and underwater plants in the foreground add depth, creating a layered effect in the composition.

This is the effect of adding Pokemon card:

Fig 2.2.14 Pokemon card

-Amelia:
·Backstory:A long time ago, a seashell had remained buried in the depths of the sea for thousands of years, but due to the effects of global warming and rising sea levels, it was eventually forced open. Inside, there emerged Amelia, a stubborn yet cheerful little monster who possessed magic unlike anything found in ordinary sea creatures. With the appearance of a small devil and a fondness for playing pranks, she was determined to protect both the ocean and the world. She proclaimed herself the "hero" of the ocean, using her unique powers to drive away any evil creatures that sought to harm the sea and its inhabitants.

·Bubble Defense:Amelia can trap enemies in bubble spheres to immobilize them or encase herself in bubbles for protection.

·Sonic Attack:Amelia uses sound waves from her voice and her harpoon to control the ocean’s waters, attacking with waves that echo like a siren’s song.

REFLECTION

Experience
The Vormator character assignment proved to be both enjoyable and beneficial for me, particularly as I am still relatively inexperienced with Adobe Illustrator. I greatly appreciated our teacher's efforts in introducing us to fundamental tools and techniques in Illustrator during class and for patiently providing personal guidance whenever I encountered difficulties. The challenge of constructing a character using only the eight given shapes was both intriguing and stimulating. Overall, this task was a highly rewarding experience.

Observations
Through research, the sir's lectures and lessons, I realized there are many details to consider when creating something. For example, making a corner look three-dimensional means adding gradients and textures. It can be tedious, but seeing the finished work gives me a sense of accomplishment.

Findings
I found that I need to do more online research and read related books to improve my use of Illustrator. Learning more shortcuts is definitely necessary.
