FINAL PROJECT

Description:
Using Project 1 (Instructable Infographic Poster) ad the base, create a 60s animated infographic video in pair.
  • Refine and upgrade the design based on Project 1.
  • Improve clarity, hierarchy, and aesthetics through motion.
Requirement:
  • Max 60s: 720p
  • 1280 × 720 px
  • Export: H.26 / MP4
  • Publish to YouTube (Unlisted)
My partner: Sun Yutong
Poster selection: Maritati Pasta Recipe Poster (Mine)

In Week 6, Yutong and I first decided to use my poster for the final animation. Then, we completed the animation timing plan and storyboard.

After that, we used Google Docs to further describe what we needed to present for each shot.

Next, under Mr. Kannan's guidance, we began to complete our Animatic, which would serve as a reference for our final video.

We refined the visual flow of the animation and eventually finalized the following storyboard scenes:
  • Title Introduction
  • Preparing the Dough
  • Kneading the Dough
  • Divide → Shape → Form
1. Scrape into a cup shape and flip into orecchiette
2. Press and roll into maccheroni
  • Cooking the Pasta and Greens
  • Labeling Ingredients for Condimento
  • Cooking the Condimento
  • Combining Pasta and Condimento
  • Final Presentation

Then, we divided the animatic drawing tasks between my partner and me. We decided to complete it together in Procreate. I worked on frames 1–13, while she completed frames 14–26.

After finishing the drawings in Procreate, we each created the animatic for our respective parts in After Effects.

FINAL ANIMATIC

Next, we determined the color palette and fonts for our video.

Next, we started editing the final video based on the division of work from the animatic. To communicate more effectively and complete the video production, we chose to work together at Yutong’s house on the editing process.

Fig.1.10 Process in AE

For the animation of stirring the dough with a spoon in this step, I followed an online tutorial and applied position and rotation keyframes to the spoon to simulate circular motion around the dough.

In this step, which shows the cat ear pasta animation, I aimed to present an effect where each piece falls and stacks up. By applying position and scale keyframes to each piece, I simulated the process of them dropping from above and piling up.

We presented our completed animation to Mr. Kannan. He said that our process was clear, but the duration of 1 minute and 48 seconds was far too long. It could only exceed the limit by about 2–3 seconds at most, and he suggested that we speed up the animation.

After receiving the feedback, I increased the overall speed of the video and noticed that some steps were still too slow. I applied additional speed adjustments to certain parts, and finally reduced the duration to 1 minute and 2 seconds.

Finally, after confirming everything with my partner, we completed the animation.

FINAL OUTCOME

FEEDBACK

WEEK 6: Sir said that we need to create a simple rough animatic based on the storyboard to demonstrate how the elements move and how the timing is arranged.

WEEK 7: Sir said that our process of animation was clear, but the duration exceeded the limit by too much, so we need to speed up and adjust the pacing of the video.

REFLECTION

Experiences:
This final project was interesting but not easy. I worked with my friend Yutong to create a 60-second recipe animation using After Effects together. At every stage, we divided the work, including selecting the poster and developing the concept, writing the timing plan, drawing the storyboard, creating a rough animatic, and producing the final animation. Since our drawing styles are different, I went to Yutong’s house during the process to work together on the animatic and final animation in order to maintain a consistent visual style. We overcame various technical challenges in After Effects and helped each other solve problems along the way. I am very grateful to my partner and to Mr. Kannan for his continuous support. We are both very satisfied with the final result and feel a strong sense of achievement.

Observation:
Because our animation duration exceeded the limit by quite a lot, which made me realize that when developing the timing plan and storyboard, it is important to mentally visualize whether each step can be completed within the allocated time. We need to consider whether the animation effects and subtitle pacing match well, in order to avoid scenes feeling too slow or too fast, and to better prepare for the final animation. I also learned that an animatic helps us clearly establish the rhythm and provides a basic framework for the final animation. In addition, during the use of After Effects, keyframes and basic tools are essential to the entire animation production process.

Findings:
I found that the pre-production stage is crucial to the success of the final outcome. We need to think and visualize more during this stage so that the workflow of producing the animation later can be more efficient and well-organized. In addition, I realized that communication and task distribution in teamwork are very important, as we need to ensure consistency in both style and ideas. Overall, this project has improved my experience in animation pre-production, enhanced my technical skills in using After Effects, and strengthened my experience working in a two-person team.
